Eiffel Tower Again

I love the Tower! This was shot with iPhone and True HDR. Later the color image was processed in Simply B&W. This App allows not only monochrome conversion but allows you to cycle through a set of traditional filters as if you were shooting Tri-X. Then you have sliders for brightness, contrast and grain. Old Flowers

I always wait for the flowers to age. Their texture, changing color and meaning attract me. Perfect for the iPhone , I shot these in Camera+, applied a depth of field filter and two frames. Enjoy, Jeff

The Eiffel Tower at Sunset

 

 This shot was taken from Trocedaro, overlooking the Eiffel Tower.  I specifically got to the location just before sunset as I knew the Tower would be glowing with the sun so low on the horizon, perpendicular to the Tower.  I had to do a little lens distortion correction in PS CS.  Shot with a Fuji X 10, Handheld.  Enjoy, Jeff

Paris and HDR

Taken with a Fuji X10 with 3 exposures, 1 stop apart, processed on Photomatix Pr0 4.2. The X10 allowed the HDR because it takes the 3 exposures with one shutter opening, thus the advancing motion of the boat is not a problem. Enjoy, Jeff

The Louvre. I waited at early eve for the lights to go on. Fuji x10 set on tripod and shot ISO 400, f5.6 at a 1.6 sec exposure fired with a cable release.

Giverny Poppies and Wildflowers

Outside of Monet's garden was the most incredible field of flowers. The light was perfect, lightly overcast and soft. Shot with a Fuji x10 at f5.6 at 35mm so that I would have enough DOF to keep everything sharp fore to distance. Enjoy, Jeff

Love in Paris

Arrived in Paris today with Jeanette for a well needed vacation. After a little rest and dinner we walked over to that Jardin Tuleri. Love was everywhere. Using my Fuji x10 at 112 mm I captured this lovely shot. The Fuji is a great camera for everything but telephoto or speed. I like it small size, inconspicuous nature and speed of focus and handling. Boats in Fog

The secret of photography is not only a good subject, composition and so forth, but LIGHT.  Ordinary images are often ordinary because of ordinary light. The best light for outdoor imagery is near sunrise, sunset, overcast light and fog.  Fog creates a mood, a softness and creates depth of field by the image fall off in the fog.  Exposure needs to be compensated by 1-1.5 stops+ as the reflectivity of the fog will trick the cameras meter.  Check your Histogram for proper exposure and adjust properly.  Enjoy, Jeff

ARM PULLERS

 Taken with a KONICA MINOLTA 7D DSLR, I loved watching this close up action of these heavyweight arm wrestlers.  Shot in color, then converted to Monochrome in PS CS.  I used a 105 mm lens to get close enough and shot with shutter speed of 1/250 to stop the action. Note the dynamism of the hands.   Local events like this are a great way to hone your action and close work photo skills.  Enjoy, Jeff

The Guardian

Near Wellesley College there is a Horticulture center. Guarding the grounds are 3 over 100 year old statues. Statues as these lend themselves to iPhone phoneography. They are big, old, already grungy. Perfect to play with!! I used Wood camera for the basic grunge effect, then finished in Snapseed. Enjoy, Jeff

Mr Bo Jangles

Shot years ago in Vegas with a KM Maxxum 7D DSLR at ISO 1600 and a 28-105 lens. Tonight I added the missing ingredient, a spotlight. Using the new App Lens Light I placed a spotlight at the upper left corner. I then added in film grain in Snapseed. Enjoy, Jeff

The Water Lilly

How spectacular! Taken with a Canon G9 camera, lightly processed in PS. Today I added a cloud-sunlight effect, made in warm in tone with a new App called Lens Light. I really like this effect. enjoy, Jeff

Abstract Thinking

The many Apps available for the iPhone allows one to be creative and have great fun. This shot of orange lillies was shot with Slow Shutter at 1/2 second with -1 stop of exposure dialed in. With the slow shutter speed I gently moved the iPhone lens over the flowers until I got the composition I liked. Next I moved it to Wood Camera and then to Camera+ for final editing. BTW , these flowers were outside the supermarket this eve. Enjoy, Jeff

Orchids

Orchids simply shot with a black drape behind to control the background and create contrast for the intense pink flowers.  Camera was a Fuji X10 in Super-Macro mode, AWB, ISO to 800 at f4.5.  I took 3 bracketed exposures 2/3 stops apart and blended them in Photomatix Pro, exposure blend mode.  Enjoy, Jeff

 

Revisiting the Amish Kids

One of the joys of digital imaging is the ability to change an image to something different than taken. Two photos down is the original non-edited image. Here I wanted to create a more dramatic feeling of the era of dark wagons. I used the App Wood Camera with their neat filters to make this. This is more digital art but nevertheless I think it has a bit more impact. Enjoy, Jeff

The Amish Kids

We decided to take Rt 20 home from Syracuse today.  I had a feeling there would be something to shoot.  Well, near Richmondville we drove by this  Old Order Amish wagon with the kids peering out the back.  An "Ah-Ha" moment occurred as I raced ahead and pulled over 200 yards up the road.  Getting out and camera ready, I shot the kids as it passed without any problems.  I used my Sony A330 with a Sigma 28-80 2.8 lens quickly set at P mode.  ISO was 800.  I really love the expression of the children.  What are they trying to say to me?  Enjoy, Jeff

 

Morning Macro

What a lovely morning!  Cool, sweet scent of dew and buds! The challenge of Macro Photography is to get a reasonably sharp image.  Focusing is critical because the DOF is measured in mm.  This was shot early this AM to capture the dew before sunlight burned it off.  Shot with a Sony A330 using Liveview, composition and manual focus was made easier.  To get a decent DOF I used an f stop of 9, ISO 800 to allow a fast shutter speed in the 1/250 range.  Lens was a Tokina 100mm Macro 2.8 with a Canon 500T close up lens attached.  Tripod of course!  Camera was fired with a remote switch. Flower Photography

 

 

 

I am a softy for Pansies.  I really enjoy their colors, symmetry and beautiful simplicity.  These were shot today with a Sony Alpha 330 DSLR and a Tokina 100mm AF Macro lens.  The light was soft shade at sunset, thus creating even diffused light essential for flower photography.  ISO was 800, aperture f4 and shutter set to 1/80 sec, handheld with VR on , in camera.    However the 3rd image was shot with intentional motion blur to create something a little different.  F was 8 and shutter 1/4 sec as the camera was swept right to left as shutter was  depressed.  A little editing in iPhoto finished the job.  Enjoy, Jeff

 

Finding the Ordinary

Today, recovering from my colonscopy with the Dr Mengele, water-boarding prep, I couldn't drive. So finally by 4PM I felt alert enough to walk around the block with my DSLR gear. Project was to find something ordinary, photograph it well and make a decent image. I used my Minolta Maxxum 7D DSLR and a 50 mm Minolta 2.8 Macro lens. A Prime Macro lens allows much better image detail capture than a standard lens, even a zoom with "Macro". I chose an f stop of 8.0, shutter speed 1/400 and ISO 1600 to stop motion as it was a little breezy. A Tripod was used of course. WB was Auto. Post processing involved a little curves adjustment, creation of Lens Flare and a touch of Multiply Blend on the seeds to sharpen them an create a little local contrast. Enjoy, Jeff

Moo Cows

A found shot near Hudson NY. Who could pass up a shot of fake cows! I used the iPhone 4 and processed it in Camera+. In Camera+ I added some punch with Clarity and a Polarizer effect. I walked around the scene to get what I thought was the best composition. Best composition includes little in the way of distracting elements in the scene as well as an area of foreground interest that then allows the viewer's eye to wander back through the photo. Magic Light and a Rainbow

Good photography often involves opportunity, timing and having a camera at that moment. While golfing this evening there was a little rain and I knew there would be a potential rainbow shot.
